Embracing Permaculture on the Avon River

We focus on permaculture farming centering around the principles of sustainability, biodiversity, and harmonious integration with the natural environment

Harmonious Integration with Nature: At Redbank Farm, our practices are deeply rooted in the belief that farming should enhance, not harm, the natural world. Situated on the edge of the Avon River in Nova Scotia, we strive to maintain the delicate balance of the ecosystem, leveraging the river's tidal richness and special terroir.

Biodiversity : Diversity is our strength. We cultivate a variety of garden plants, each chosen for their ability to thrive in our unique climate and soil conditions. This variety not only enriches the soil but also supports a healthier, more resilient farm ecosystem.

Sustainable Livestock Management: Our livestock - including cattle, pigs, chickens, sheep, and milking cows - are raised with the utmost care and respect. We practice rotational grazing, ensuring animals contribute to the health of the land while benefiting from its richness. Their natural behaviors are encouraged, promoting wellbeing and sustainability.

Circular Systems and Waste Reduction: We believe in minimizing waste and maximizing resources. By using brewers' grain and salt marsh grass, we create a circular system where farm waste is repurposed, enriching the soil and feeding our livestock. Cattails from the riverbanks are utilized for their ecological benefits, contributing to soil health and water purification.

Community and Education: Redbank Farm is more than just a farm; it’s a community hub where knowledge about sustainable farming and permaculture is shared. We host workshops and tours, educating others on the importance of sustainable agriculture and how it can be implemented.

Respecting the Land and Its History: We acknowledge the deep history and heritage of the Avon River area. Our farming practices are designed to respect and preserve this legacy, ensuring that the land remains fertile and vibrant for generations to come.

Woodlot Management and Wildlife Habitat Enhancement: we recognize the critical role of forests in sustaining a healthy ecosystem. Our woodlot management practices are designed to promote forest health, biodiversity, and resilience. Through selective harvesting, we maintain the forest's vitality while ensuring a sustainable supply of wood for farm use. Simultaneously, we are committed to improving wildlife habitats. By creating and preserving natural spaces within the farm, we support a diverse range of wildlife species. These areas not only offer refuge and resources for local fauna but also contribute to the ecological balance, ensuring that our farming activities coexist in harmony with the native wildlife of Nova Scotia. This approach underlines our dedication to fostering a rich, biodiverse landscape where agriculture and nature thrive together.

Adaptation and Innovation: We continuously adapt and innovate, incorporating permaculture principles in response to environmental changes and new research. This adaptability ensures our farm remains resilient, productive, and sustainable.

This philosophy positions Redbank Farm as a model of sustainable agriculture, deeply connected to its unique location and committed to practices that are environmentally friendly, economically viable, and socially responsible.
